Historic house, Ilchester
Nina's historic 18th century house was updated with a new kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms etc. Right in the centre of town, it overlooked a large garden. However as is usual with old houses, challenging to redesign for modern life but also maintain the character and original features. Nina contacted me about her north facing living room, a lovely square space, with original oak doors. But a low ceiling with dark beams, small windows, and dark curtains gave the room an oppressive feel.
Its a difficult choice if you have invested in furniture and fabrics which don't address your needs. Especially when it has an effect on your health and wellbeing. The choice is sticking it out and accepting you are unhappy or discarding them to purchase the right items. An example in Nina's house were the lovely, rich, dark curtains, opulent and lovely, but in a North facing room made it look dark and oppressive. Don't angst too much, re-sell them to recoup some of your losses!
Annie came up with ideas that never even occurred to us. She listened to what we liked and took time to understand our interests and preferences.
